Historia stosowania ziół jako środków leczniczych jest tak dawna, jak ludzkość.
Człowiek pierwotny szukając roślin jadalnych natrafiał na takie, które wprawdzie
nie nadawały się na pokarm, ale uśmierzały bóle, powodowały szybkie gojenie
się ran, działały przeczyszczająco — w ten sposób odkrywał rośliny lecznicze.
Zbieraniem roślin leczniczych i leczeniem zajmowały się przeważnie kobiety,
przekazując z pokolenia na pokolenie uzyskane wiadomości o działaniu ziół,
0 ich zastosowaniu i przyrządzaniu. O tym. że była to wiedza bogata, może świad­
czyć fakt, że w dawnych wiekach o cechach i zastosowaniu ziół uczyli się od tzw.
babek nawet lekarze.
