Keduanya harus berpisah karena Samsul Bahri harus melanjutkan sekolah dokter ke Jakarta. Novel ini juga menghadirkan sosok Datuk Maringgih yang merupakan seorang kaya yang kikir di Padang. Datuk Maringgih melakukan tipu muslihat kepada Bagindo Sulaiman (ayah Sitti Nurbaya) yang membuat ia jatuh miskin. Datuk Maringgih awalnya meminjamkan uang kepada Bagindo Sulaiman yang kemudian uang itu tidak dapat dikembalikan oleh Bagindo Sulaiman. Datuk Maringgih akhirnya mengadukan hal itu kepada Belanda agar Baginda Sulaiman dipenjarakan.
