Poems and Prose: A Bilingual Edition (European Poetry Classics) 🔍
Northwestern University Press, European poetry classics, Evanston, Ill, 2005
Georg Trakl; translated from the German and with an introduction and notes by Alexander Stillmark 🔍
description
"The distinctive autumnal and melancholy tone of Trakl's work - especially admired by his patron Ludwig Wittgenstein - reflects the spiritual and social disintegration on the eve of the First World War. The generalized sense of anguish and exaltation of this period is the background to Trakl's transcendent, often hymnic, always lyrical voice and to his haunting imagery in which purgatory and paradise are never far apart. This bilingual edition, the most comprehensive to date, gives English-language readers the chance to get to know Trakl's work more fully than ever before."--Jacket. Read more...

Alternative description
The stories in the book's first part examine the lives of an upper-class Jewish family in suburban Houston. Each family member is reeling from the effects of some great social trauma -- the liberation of the Holocaust camps, the Vietnam War, and the changing sexual mores of the 1960s. Ceci, the youngest daughter, transforms from a precocious girl reciting Eleanor Roosevelt's memoirs in talent contests to a news reporter struggling to remove herself from a string of failed love affairs. Her mother, a woman of considerable girth, has a placid demeanor that belies her sharp wit and frustrated sexuality, and her father, after serving in World War II, has declined into prosperity as a soap suds mogul.
