Richard Wagner (Leipzip 1813 - Venecia 1883) utilizó las leyendas medievales del Edda y del Nibelungenenlied como fuente de inspiración para su obra más emblemática, El Anillo del Nibelungo (Der Ring des Nibelungen), una tetralogía que, en sus manos, se transformó en una de las creaciones más paradigmáticas del espíritu germánico y la más extensa historia unitaria de la ópera.El Anillo lo componen cuatro obras: un prólogo y tres jornadas tituladas El Oro del Rhin, La Walkyria, Sigfrido y El Ocaso de los Dioses. Su gestación duró 28 años, desde 1848 con los primeros esbozos hasta la representación completa de las cuatro obras en 1876 en el teatro creado por el compositor en Bayreuth.
