福建在中国版图上所占的面积不大,可以说是中国面积比较小的省份之一,但是福建在中国建筑史学上的地位并不低。福建古建筑像一颗颗五彩缤纷的宝石,在古老的八闽大地上熠熠生辉。它们以其鲜明的地方特色、悠久的技艺传承、优美的建筑造型、丰富的文化内涵在中国建筑史上当之无愧地占有一席之地,具有珍贵的历史、科学和艺术价值。综观福建古建筑,其特色可以用一早、二杂、三奇来归纳。"早"指的是福建古建筑的历史悠久。据考古发现,在三明市万寿岩船帆洞下层,发掘出距今4万年左右的旧石器时代晚期人工铺就的砾石地面,说明福建是目前已知的最早在原始聚落点以石铺地的地区之一。2000多年前的城村汉城遗址是武夷山世界文化与自然遗产的重要组成部分,是长江以南保存最完整的汉城遗址。福建地处我国南方,气候温热潮湿,对木构建筑为主的古代建筑保存不利,但仍有遗构保留至今。如建于北宋乾德二年(公元964年)的福州华林寺大殿、重建于北宋大中祥符二年(
