以图文结合的形式为我们展现了浪漫主义在欧洲的源起及发展历程。 浪漫主义首先跟随歌德的先锋脚步出现在德国耶拿以及海德堡的社团当中。几乎就在同时,雪莱、济慈和拜伦等英国诗人立即给予响应,而沃尔特·司各特也开始在欧洲宣扬他历史研究的崭新视角。弗里德里希深刻改革了风景画,透纳则颠覆传统,运用几乎抽象的形状作画。法国的浪漫主义确立较晚,直到十九世纪二三十年代才围绕维克多·雨果的魅力形象出现。循着格罗和籍里柯的足迹,德拉克洛瓦犹如星辰般崛起。浪漫主义最后来到意大利,唤醒全体国民的爱国热情,最终促成1870年的国家统一。浪漫主义的发生尽管具有地域和时间的差异,但却始终是一场统一而同质的运动,在二三十年间引起欧洲灵魂的巨大变革。本书的第二部分重点介绍了艺术中的浪漫主义,包含浪漫主义的表现形式和浪漫主义的特点。如在风景画中,赋予已完结的以未完结的一缕空气、一束倒影、一道闪光,便是将其浪漫主义化;在肖像画中,浪漫主义艺术家则多以独处于大自然中的形象出现,站在暴风雨将至的天空下,周遭的环境象征着他们的孤独、厌世以及对自己的艺术毫无条件的忠诚;浪漫主义作品常以“美与死亡”作为创作主题,美学的快感因为死亡那焦虑、恐怖且触手可及的存在感而更显强烈;等等。用司汤达的话来说:“浪漫主义是向人民介绍文学作品的艺术,这些文学作品能够根据他们实际的习惯和信仰为他们带来尽可能多的乐趣。而古典主义则相反,是在向他们介绍为他们的曾祖父带来最大乐趣的文学。”此外,在浪漫主义艺术中,很好地体现了艺术的博爱,涉及小说、诗歌、绘画、建筑、音乐等多种艺术形式。
