Es su última oportunidad de comunicar sus pensamientos, de esclarecerlo todo hasta el final y de expresar, para quien en un futuro quiera leerlas, las opiniones que sus contemporáneos no han querido oír. Fruto de ello es un volumen extenso y misceláneo en todos los sentidos: junto a ensayos netamente filosóficos hay en él mucho de biografía intelectual, de retrato psicológico y de opiniones personales que en algunos casos Schopenhauer habría hecho mejor en no escribir. Nos encontramos aquí, más que en ninguna otra obra, con el filósofo y el hombre, con las luces y las sombras de un autor controvertido y, en todo caso, irrepetible.
